The method involves scanning two regions (7) of an object and receiving sampling signals, which represent respective parts of surface structures (1) of the object within respective regions. Two signatures are generated from the sampling signals. The signatures are combined with the object and stored in a specific form in a radio-frequency identification-chip. The signatures are compared with reference signatures. Information about authenticity and/or identity of the object is generated based on the comparison result. An independent claim is also included for a sensor for scanning a surface.
