The adapter (7) has an adapter part rotationally connected with a driven shaft (9) from a drive shaft (5). A balance component is connected with the drive shaft and the driven shaft. Rotary motion of the drive shaft is transferred in direction of the adapter part. A rotation direction of the adapter part is interrupted or continued based on change of direction of the drive shaft. The balance component is formed as a two-armed anchor, and a bearing receives the drive shaft. An anchor wheel is made to cooperate with the adapter part with circumferential teeth. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a machine tool.
