The method involves detecting an actual position or actual speed of a rotor (15) of a controllable torque adjuster of a steering system (1). A dominant interference frequency is determined based on the detected rotor position or rotor speed. Presence of steering wheel torsional vibration is determined based on the determined frequency. A vibration mode of the frequency is determined and considered for determination of the presence of steering wheel torsional vibration. The determination of the interference frequency is carried out as a function of amplitude of the rotor position. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting steering wheel torsional vibrations during operation of a steering system in a vehicle.
