The method involves determining a lean-running limit (20) of an internal combustion engine for a fuel mixture. A composition value is determined from the lean-running limit. Another composition value is determined as a function of a lambda value of exhaust gases in the course of a pump current, where a wide-band lambda probe is arranged in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The exhaust gas formed during the combustion of fuels distinguishes in the ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for determining the composition of a fuel mixture of two fuels, particularly gasoline and ethanol, for operating an internal combustion engine.
