The method involves activating electrical oscillator circuits (C, L) at discrete time points and de-activating the electrical oscillator circuits, where the time interval between two consecutive time points is greater than 0.5 seconds and less than 5 seconds. A time curve of electrical voltage is evaluated after de-activating the electrical oscillator circuits, where the electrical voltage is controlled in the electrical oscillator circuits. The presence of a radio frequency identification (RFID)-tag is identified based on the time curve of the electrical voltage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a software program for detecting presence of a radio frequency identification (RFID)-tag and hand-held unit (2) a RFID-reading device for detecting presence of a RFID-tag and hand-held unit.
