The present invention relates to a process for the investigation of the dynamic operating behavior of an exhaust gas turbocharger 18 for an internal combustion engine, comprising the steps of: specifying a defined hot gas masses current, the defined time-dependent pressure pulsations, operating a turbine 5 of the exhaust gas turbocharger 18 by means of the pressure pulsating hot gas mass flow which is relevant in combustion engine operating ranges, determination of measured variables of the hot gas mass flow which operated by means of the exhaust gas turbocharger, 18, wherein the measured variables in defined time windows can be determined, for determining a current efficiency of the turbine 5 on the basis of the determined measured variables, determining a momentary high-speed index of the turbine 5 on the basis of the determined measured variables and creation of a momentary turbines characteristic field. The present invention furthermore relates to an apparatus 1 for carrying out such a process.
