The method involves detecting luminosity of an LCD display (3) by a brightness sensor (4), and supplying output signals of the sensor to a control unit. A control signal for adjusting backlight luminosity of the display is determined by the control unit under consideration of the output signals, where the control unit considers contrast adjustment of the display during determination of the control signal. The output signals are sampled by an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. Scanning rate of the A/D converter is changed based on the output signals. An independent claim is also included for a device for adjusting backlight luminosity of a display.
