The method involves inducing a test signal in a region of an input of an electric filter (1), and detecting a resulting signal in a region of an output (3) of the filter. The test signal is provided by a signal generator (5) is coupled with a controller (6). A measuring device (8) is connected with the output of the filter by a coupling (9). The resulting signal is compared with an expectation signal by an evaluation unit (7), and malfunction of the filter is detected by a minimum variation between the resulting signal and the expectation signal. An independent claim is also included for a filter comprising a test device.
