The device has multiple energy storage cells (Z1-Z4) interconnected in a switching configuration such that two storage cell planes are connected in series to each other, where each storage cell plane includes two essentially parallel connected energy storage branches between two potential nodes. Each of the energy storage branches includes an energy storage cell and safety devices (S1-S4) e.g. safety fuse element and spring fuse element, where the energy storage cell and the safety devices are serially interconnected within the respective energy storage branches.
