The method involves receiving an input of alphanumeric characters, and searching for folders, data or data contents based on the alphanumeric input in a predetermined search field. The search results to the predetermined search field are displayed on a display (14). Actuation of fixed-function control elements (16a-16d) e.g. push buttons, is determined, and the search field is modified according to the actuation of the control elements, and the search result for a new search field is displayed on the display. The search field associated with the control elements is limited. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising an infotainment system with an input unit.
