The system has an electric motor (M) i.e. alternating current (AC) motor, to which AC i.e. multi-phase AC, is supplied via a controllable power semiconductor of power electronics (2) of an inverter. Determination units are provided in control electronics (1) for determining model values for a physical variable i.e. torque. The control electronics is connected to a safety monitor for data exchange via electrical cables, such that one of the determined model values is supplied to the monitor. The monitor comprises a comparison unit for comparing the model value with the other model value. The safety monitor is formed as a structured two-channel safety-related system. The power electronics is formed as a power amplifier. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a drive system.
