The method involves electrically connecting storage modules (36, 40) of an electric energy storage device (12) i.e. battery system (10), of a vehicle in series by a contact device, and arranging a detector in the vehicle for detecting acceleration and pressure above an acceleration threshold and a pressure threshold. The modules are electrically, pneumatically, electromagnetically, electromechanically and/or electronically separated from each other by separating devices (28, 30) depending on a condition detected by the detector, where the condition indicates an accident state of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a safety device comprising a separating device for separating storage modules from each other depending on a condition detected by a detector.
