The device has a reception compartment (2) receiving an insulin vial (3), and an exchangeable injection needle (4) puncturing a patient, when moved in a direction. A pressing facility (5) forces a medical agent from the vial. The needle is movable from an initial position based on a motion profile in which the needle moves a distance followed by a rest period, and another motion profile in which the needle is returned to the initial position. An activation facility with manually-actuated trigger elements (13, 14) initiates a motion of the needle in accordance with one of the motion profiles.
