The method involves providing an air separation apparatus with three operating modes. The apparatus is operated in the third operating mode in which cold boxes produce oxygen gas and additional quantity of the oxygen gas that liquefies quantity of compressed and supercharged air greater than quantity of air used in the first mode i.e. nominal mode, and the second mode by a heat exchange with liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen, where a number of air compressors (C1-C4) and superchargers operated in the second mode is lower than that of the first and third modes. An independent claim is also included for an air separation installation comprising an air separation apparatus.
