PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document illuminator which is not affected by the reflection density of the document, is highly efficient and reduces unnecessary luminous flux by adopting a configuration that direct light rays from fluorescent lamps are not directly emitted to a document illumination section and utilizing only condensed luminous flux guided by reflectors, thereby eliminating the light emission to an unnecessary area. PSOLUTION: The document illuminator 31 includes: the fluorescent lamps 2-1 and 2-2 each having an opening 2a from which a luminous flux is emitted as a light source; and the reflectors 1-1 and 1-2 each having a shape of an ellipse to collect the light rays emitted from the corresponding fluorescent lamp. The opening 2a of each of the fluorescent lamps 2-1 and 2-2 is arranged obliquely downward, and the reflectors 1-1 and 1-2 are disposed obliquely below the fluorescent lamps. A luminous flux emitted from each of the openings of the fluorescent lamps travels via the corresponding reflector and is condensed on the document reading position. The focal point of one of the reflectors is arranged on a straight line of the center of the fluorescent lamp and the center of the opening and another focal point is arranged in the vicinity of the document reading position.
