The present invention provides vectors that contain and express genes encoding African plague virus VP2 and VP5 proteins or an epitope thereof that elicits an anti-African plague virus response in a horse, provides compositions comprising said vectors, methods for vaccinating against African plague virus, and kits for use with such methods and compositions.
