Electronic system, methods and apparatus for teaching and examining music theory

Disclosed is a system (100) for teaching and examining in the field of music. Included in the system are a display (110) to present a user with one or more musical tasks and a menu with one or more selectable icons, an input device (120) allowing selection of the one or more icons and a processor (130) in communication with the input device and the display. The processor is arranged to enable the user to form an element of musical notation with the input device upon selection of one of the selectable icons. The processor can then compare one or more characteristics of the element of musical notation with one or more predetermined thresholds and generate a mark based on the result of this comparison.
