Disclosed is a transgenic non-human animal comprising cells containing a DNA transgene encoding Qpct or an isoenzyme of Qpct, which overexpresses Qpct or an isoenzyme of Qpct. Also disclosed is an in vivo method for screening for biologically active agents that inhibit or promote Qpct production and a transgenic mouse comprising a transgenic nucleotide sequence encoding Qpct operably linked to a promoter, integrated into the genome of the mouse, wherein the mouse demonstrates a phenotype that can be reversed or ameliorated with a Qpct inhibitor.
