The device has a front part (F) and a rear part (R) in which axial clearances between teeth (9) of a sub-calibrated bar (3) and grooves (8) forming housings in a sabot (2) are variable. The axial clearance realized at the level of each of the front and rear parts is increased between a median zone (M) of the sabot and a front end or rear end of the sabot. The median zone is longitudinally placed at the level of a thrust plate of the sabot and has a length less than or equal to 30 percent of total length of an interface between the sabot and the bar.
