The invention relates to a method for preventing spontaneous combustion during the pit coal exploitation with undermined bank. According to the invention, the method consists in the inertization with nitrogen of the exploited area upon the occurrence of a subterranean combustion, said nitrogen being in a concentration ensuring a content of oxygen lower than or equal to 5% in the exploited area, the nitrogen being conveyed to the exploited area through some pipes located in said area or through some holes drilled at the surface, which communicate with the exploitation area.
