A method for determining the readiness of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia for surgical treatment comprises the measurement of hemodynamic and respiratory parameters of the patient. The determination of availability of pulmonary hypertension is made with right to left shunting of blood by measuring preductal and postductal peripheral blood saturation. The criteria for readiness for surgery are: saturation, higher 90% at FiO2 less than 0.6, reducing the pressure in the pulmonary artery or reducing the pulmonary hypertension and the absence of intracardiac shunting of blood from right to left within 24 hours.
