The invention relates to methods, compositions and devices for controlling a (bio)-chemical reaction by pressure, using high-pressure optimized biocomponents. The methods and compositions according to the invention preferably use a combination of high-pressure optimized and low-pressure optimized biocomponents which may be present either next to each other or spatially separate from each other. The high-pressure optimized biocomponents preferably have a functional optimum at a pressure in the range of from 11 to 200, especially of from 30 to 200 MPa, and the low-pressure optimized biocomponents have an optimum at a pressure in the range of from 0.1 to 10 MPa. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the high-pressure optimized biocomponents originate from deep sea organisms, especially obligately barophilic deep sea organisms.
