PURPOSE: Measurement and characterization of upstream burst noise is provided to improve the overall operation of not only each communication device but also an entire communication system by characterizing burst noise in each communication channel.;CONSTITUTION: A first communications device(110) comprises a transmitter(112) having an encoder(114) and an receiver(116) having a decoder(118). The first communication device is connected to a second communication device(120) through a communication channel(199). A second communications device comprises a transmitter(126) having an encoder(128) and a receiver(122) having a decoder(124). A satellite communication channel(130) uses satellite reception antennas(132,134). A radio communication channel(140) uses towers(142,144) and/or local antennas(152,154).
