The vibration damper (10) has a hydraulic cylinder (12) with lower and upper work chambers (30,32) that are filled with electrorheological fluid. The piston surfaces and cross-section areas of piston rods (14) in the work chambers are equally large. An annular gap (26) is provided between inner and outer cylindrical walls (22,24) of a cabinet (20) of the hydraulic cylinder to form a fluid connection between the work chambers. The viscosity of the electrorheological fluid is varied in the annular gap to produce damping effect. An independent claim is included for attenuation apparatus.
