The device (10) comprises an adaptor (12) for counting colonies, a sample containing colonies, a lighting device to illuminate the sample, and a control device. The lighting device includes three lighting units having three different color LEDs to produce light in the primary color of red, the primary color of green and primary color of blue. The three different colored LEDs are controlled in a respective lighting unit on the control device and formed in a respective lighting unit by high-power LEDs. The device (10) comprises an adaptor (12) for counting colonies, a sample containing colonies, a lighting device to illuminate the sample, and a control device. The lighting device includes three lighting units having three different color LEDs to produce light in the primary color of red, the primary color of green and primary color of blue. The three different colored LEDs are controlled in a respective lighting unit on the control device and formed in a respective lighting unit by high-power LEDs. The control device is designed such that resulting color of the light impinging the sample is adjustable by a corresponding activation of the additive color mixture generated by the three different colored lights, where more than fifty different resulting colors are adjusted. The lighting unit is designed as a surface mountable device. The controller is designed in such a way that by appropriately controlling the three different colored LEDs in the respective lighting unit, the brightness of the light impinging the sample is adjusted. The control device is designed in such a way that: by appropriately controlling the additive color mixture generated by the three different colored LEDs in a respective lighting unit, resulting color of the light impinging the sample is adjustable in the visible range in defined steps from a first to a second predetermined limit; and the resulting color of the sample acting on light is adjusted in one direction or in another direction. The adaptor comprises a transparent substrate for the sample, which is applied on the substrate, where the sample is illuminated from the bottom of the transparent substrate and/or light from the side of a respective lighting unit is acted on the substrate. A light scattering unit is provided between the respective lighting unit and the sample, where a side facing the illumination unit is realized by an appropriate roughness of the transparent substrate.
