The method involves detecting an environment of a stationary vehicle to test an approaching object towards the stationary vehicle. The nature of the approaching object is analyzed, where an expected trajectory is determined, through which the object is approaching the stationary vehicle. A warning is issued to the object when a collision of the object with the stationary vehicle is anticipated. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for warning of approaching objects to avoid a collision of the object with a stationary vehicle.
