A process is described for the preparation of linear saturated alkanes of primary linear alcohols by dehydroxymethylation of the primary alcohols in the presence of a catalyst and hydrogen at a pressure in the range from 1 to 250 bar and a temperature in the range of from 150 to 250°C, in which the catalyst is a ruthenium - or rhodium - catalyst is used. Furthermore, the use of ruthenium - or rhodium - catalysts in a process for the preparation of linear saturated alkanes of primary alcohols.
