The optical distance sensor has a light source (1), a single projection grid (2) with a defined grid period (T1). The sensor also has a periodic detector arrangement (3) and an evaluation unit (4). The light source irradiates the projection grid in a divergent manner. A periodic fringe pattern with a defined fringe pattern period results in a level of the detector arrangement without interposition of an imaging optical system.
