The method involves introducing local structural changes in area of free surfaces (5) of a vehicle part (1) based on determined crack configuration caused by shape loading of the vehicle part such that a designed controlling of the crack configuration of overload crack (4) in a surface of the vehicle part is caused. The structural changes in material of the vehicle part are caused by welding beads on the surface of the vehicle part. The crack configuration is controlled such additional absorption of crash energy takes place by crack propagation of the overload crack. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle part comprising a bumper cross beam.
