Processing oil containing wastewater, preferably operational cooling lubricants for metal processing, comprises storing the oil-containing wastewater in at least one waste water and automatically controlling the water content and/or the oil content of oil containing wastewater, preferably by density measurements. The oil-containing wastewater controlled in dependence to the oil content is led into a collecting container (11) or into a first wastewater treatment step (4) or into a second wastewater treatment step (5). Processing oil containing wastewater, preferably operational cooling lubricants for metal processing, comprises storing the oil-containing wastewater in at least one waste water and automatically controlling the water content and/or the oil content of oil containing wastewater, preferably by density measurements. The oil-containing wastewater controlled in dependence to the oil content is led into a collecting container (11) or into a first wastewater treatment step (4) or into a second wastewater treatment step (5), and a first threshold value (S1) and a second threshold value (S2) of the oil content are selected so that (a) wastewater with an oil content of = S1 is led for further processing in the collecting container, (b) wastewater with an oil content of = S2 and less than S1 is led into the first waste water treatment step, within which the oil content is concentrated by water by evaporation, and (c) wastewater with an oil content of less than S2 is led into the second wastewater treatment stage, within which the oil content, preferably is concentrated by ultrafiltration. An independent claim is also included for a device for treating oil containing wastewater, preferably operational cooling lubricant mixture for metal processing, comprising (i) at least one water storage tank, within which the oil-containing wastewater is stored for processing, (ii) at least one measuring device, which is connected/connectable to at least one wastewater storage container and is designed so that the water content and/or the oil content wastewater stored in at least one wastewater storage container is automatically determined by density measurements, (iii) at least one collecting container, within which the oil-containing wastewater is stored for further utilization, (iv) the first wastewater treatment step with at least an evaporator means, by which the oil content of oil containing wastewater is concentrated by evaporation of water, (v) the second wastewater treatment step with at least an ultrafiltration means by which the oil content of oil containing wastewater is concentrated by ultrafiltration, and (vi) a first control device (3), which is connected to at least one measuring device of at least one wastewater storage container, and is designed so that the oil-containing wastewater as a function of oil content determined by the measuring device, is either led to at least one collecting container or the first or second treatment step.
