The method involves determining a shape of a reference receiving pulse, transmitting an ultrasonic measuring pulse, and executing a measuring track. Receiving signals are received and scanned with a scanning rate. The ultrasonic pulse is searched in the receiving signals. The ultrasonic pulse is separated from the receiving signals. A wavelet is generated from the separated ultrasonic pulse. The wavelet is transformed from the separated ultrasonic pulse and the reference pulse based on the generated wavelet. A run time of the ultrasonic pulse is determined from the wavelet transformation. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining run time of an ultrasonic pulse.
