The device has retainers (213) for retaining rod-shaped articles (611-613) and arranged at a pitch distance to an outer circumference of processing and pitch changing drums (300, 100). The changing drum is arranged between the processing drum and a branch drum (200) and designed such that transfer of the articles between the changing drum and the branch drum takes place with the pitch distance and transfer of the articles between the changing drum and the processing drum takes place with another pitch distance. The retainers are fastened to the changing drum over lever segments (121, 122). An independent claim is also included for a method for processing rod-shaped articles.
