The method involves capturing video-optical images (100) of a region (11) of interest that belongs to a patient. The video-optically captured images are evaluated (101) with respect to formation of shadows (12) in the region of interest. A surgical lamp is controlled (102) in such a manner that the formation of shadows is minimized. The shadowing is formed by a medical personnel, and the region of interest is detected based on predeterminable characteristics (M) e.g. operation cloth, operation cutlery, open wound and/or color.
