The method involves detecting and evaluating time duration of a support moment over number of operating cycles. A fault memory entry is generated when amount of neutral support moment is greater than a predetermined threshold of reference moment or time duration of the support moment in a predetermined guidance maneuver is greater than predetermined measure of reference duration in all operating cycles. Man value of the time duration of the support moment in all operating cycles is determined, where the mean value for entire time duration of each operating cycle is intended. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting defect in a landing gear and a steering system of a vehicle.
