The method involves determining images to be evaluated by a rank table (212). A probe is determined by another rank table (213). A common rank table (215) is determined from a combination of the probe and the images. The common rank table is derived from the two rank tables of the involved images so that rank transformed images are provided by the common rank table as additional rank tables for the images to be evaluated and for a probe image. Characteristics of the images to be evaluated are developed based on a difference between the two rank transformed images.
