The equipment has retention devices (Hv.1-Hv.6) provided with side surfaces parallel to each other. The retention devices are designed such that recesses are embedded in each side surface of the retention devices. The side surfaces are arranged such that the recesses have recess regions. A gripping device (Gv) is designed such that it alters distance between grippers (Gf.1, Gf.2). The grippers are resorted into the retention devices through objects (Ps.1, Ps.2, Ps.4, Ps.5, Ps.6) i.e. flat mail pieces, by the recess regions, so that the grippers clamp the objects between the recesses. An independent claim is also included for a method for sorting objects.
