The method involves computing a control signal for a pulse shaper (120) for formation of a laser pulse with back-computed parameters, where the shaper is located in front of an input end in a beam path. The control signal is applied (130) to the shaper, and amplitude, phase and polarization are modulated for the laser pulse. The laser pulse is preformed based on the parameters. The preformed laser pulse is introduced (140) into an input end of an optical transmission system. The laser pulse withdrawn from an output end of the transmission system is applied (150) for multi-photon excitation. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product having a set of instructions for executing a method for performing multi-photon excitation.
