Brush and slip ring assembly for e.g. alternator-starter utilized for internal combustion engine of car, has scouring layers for eliminating, by friction, oxide layer tending to develop at interface between brushes and slip rings
The assembly has brushes (101, 102) whose end faces (111, 112) are in contact with outer surfaces (142, 143) of slip rings (10a, 10b), respectively. The brushes/rings comprise scouring layers (120) for eliminating, by friction, an oxide layer tending to develop at an interface between the brushes and the rings. Each scouring layer is sandwiched between two performance layers (122) of the brushes. Each scouring layer comprises 65 or 95 weight percent of metal, and remaining percent of graphite. Each performance layer comprises 15 or 45 weight percent of metal, and remaining percent of graphite.
