An electronic device is worn by a living species and comprises sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes which collect data relating to the movement of the species. This data is processed by an algorithm which identifies the type of activity. The output of the algorithm is also a quantitative and qualitative measure of the subjectâ s activity. The algorithm may use adaptive feature extraction and classification on the sensor outputs. The device may be worn by a dog for a period of time to gather information about the subjectâ s activity during the time period. The algorithm may be enhanced by supervised learning. The invention may be used to determine the changing state of mobility and health of the subject based on sensor data. The invention may provide fine-grained analysis of data, which in turn can be used for simple data display, feedback, decision-making, control or automation.
