The present invention relates to method of synthesizing camphor derived nanocarbons and its composites with nano/micro-structured metal oxides for the purpose of creating electrodes for rechargeable energy storage applications. These composite material electrodes exhibit a significant increase in the specific capacitance energy density and power density when compared to that of the metal oxide material electrode without the nanocarbons. This invention is directed to electrochemical storage devices such as high performance supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells etc
