The device has a pipe (T) and a deformation component that are moved against each other during collision of a vehicle to generate a signal representing collision energy. An actuator (C) adjusts energy absorption properties of the device based on the signal. The pipe and the component form a spatially limited movement space, where reduction in the collision energy occurs when the spatially limited movement space is depleted. Time limited adjustment of the energy absorption properties is performed based on the spatially limited movement space. The control device and the device for reducing collision energy are connected with each other through a Flex ray(RTM: robust, scalable, deterministic and fault-tolerant digital serial bus system) bus system. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling energy absorption properties of a device for adaptively reducing collision energy (2) a control device for controlling energy absorption properties of a device for adaptively reducing collision energy.
