The method involves identifying the occurrence of irregular combustion or an increased risk of irregular combustion. An operation is switched with dual fuel injection. An injection quantity is injected during the suction period of the working cycle. Another injection quantity is injected within the working cycle in compression period. The injection of the entire latter injection quantity or the balance point of the injection of the latter injection quantity lies temporally before the reaching of the upper dead center.
