The transmission (10) has an input shaft (12) for introducing torque. An output shaft (14) discharges the torque. Two pairs of switchable gears (24, 28) transmit the torque from the input shaft to the output shaft. A planetary transmission (50) couples one of the pairs of gears with the other pair of gears. A planetary wheel (56) couples a sun wheel (52) with a ring gear (54). A planetary carrier (58) carries the planetary wheel. An actuating element (60) couples the sun wheel, the ring gear, the planetary wheel and the carrier of the planetary transmission with each other. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor car transmission.
