The method involves emitting a transmission signal (22) over an ultrasonic transducer (2) and receiving and evaluating an echo signal (24) in response to the transmission signal. The echo signal has a useful signal component (24.1) of an object (30) to be detected. The echo signal is filtered for generating an interference signal failure line (12) and is filtered-out by the filtering of the useful signal component. The interference signal failure line is overlaid with an offset (D) and is used as dynamic threshold curve (10) for the evaluation of the received echo signal. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for determining the distance for a comparison of the received echo signal with the threshold curve; and (2) a device for detecting the surroundings in a vehicle.
