The device (5) comprises a signal generator (7), which generates a periodic sinusoidal signal for determining the angle of rotation of an electric motor (6). The rotational direction of the electric motor is determined by the sinusoidal signal, such that the dextrorotatory and the levorotatory direction of rotation is represented by the change in amplitude of the sinusoidal signal. The cosine signal is simulated as a reference signal by the sinusoidal signal. The cosine signal has a quarter period of phase shift to the sinusoidal signal. An independent claim is included for a method for determining and monitoring the rotational motion of an electric motor in an electromechanical vehicle steering system.
