A reference value for the acceleration of motor vehicle is calculated, based on performance data of vehicle, and the operational data of motor vehicle, which is stored in motor vehicle, is detected by the sensors in motor vehicle. The actual acceleration of motor vehicle is detected through the sensor. The actual acceleration of reference value differs for the acceleration of motor vehicle, if manipulation of engine control unit is present. The calculated reference value is compared with the actual measured acceleration to detect manipulation of engine control unit. An independent claim is included for a system for detecting manipulation of engine control unit of motor vehicle.
