The apparatus has an observation device i.e. microscope, for visual observation of a region of a workpiece. A video image detector (13) detects an eye or a vision aid of a user in a preset monitored area attached to the observation device. The video detector forms a detection signal. A release device releases a laser light beam for processing the workpiece depending on the detection signal. The video detector detects a projected image on an eye surface (6) or a spectacle lens surface. An image generation device comprises an arrangement of LEDs (8). The monitored area is a near region of an eyepiece.
