The method involves detecting the vibration of a cutter (3) of the cutting unit by an acoustic sensor (8) without contact. The sensor generates a frequency spectrum which is evaluated by a signal processing unit (9) or a data processing unit (11). An alarm signal to an alarm unit (13) or a correction signal to a controller unit (12) is given based on the evaluation, which changes the operational state of the cutting unit. An independent claim is included for a device for monitoring a microtome cutting unit.
