The device has a pressure tool (3) provided on a rear side of endless abrasive belts (1, 2) in a direction on a workpiece and pressed at the workpiece. A handling device (4) is provided with a workpiece retainer (5) i.e. vacuum holding device. The handling device is designed with angle adjustable drives (6-8) i.e. electrical servomotors, for moving the workpiece around or along spatial axes. A programmable computer is associated to the device. The workpiece with edges or surfaces to be processed is controlled by the computer and marginally positioned at a distance from the belt. An independent claim is also included for an operating process of a belt grinding device.
