The method involves determining the type and orientation of dislocations formed in a metallic workpiece (2), by determining the propagation velocity of sound wave oriented similarly in the metallic workpiece and the effective width of the dislocations in the direction transverse to the shaft extension of the grating dependent energy densities. By using the grating dependent energy densities, the volume of the metallic workpiece is determined through an electrical pulse which is introduced into the metallic workpiece.
